3. Is your skin dry, oily or combination?
Our skin has many oil glands that secrete oil (sebum). They form a film, or barrier, that helps the skin absorb and retain moisture “inside”, and the external irritants, allergens and bacteria “outside”. Healthy skin holds sufficient amount of hydration that keeps it soft, youthful and supple.
The right balance between moisture and oil is crucial for protecting the skin from dryness. Internal factors such as stress, heredity, hormonal imbalance, or diet can cause excessive or insufficient oil production. These factors, along with environmental conditions, including adverse climate and pollution, can lead to problem skin.
Therefore, wash your face with lukewarm water and wait about 10 minutes. Do not apply moisturizer. If your skin feels stiff and itchy, you probably have dry skin. Take a thin paper tissue and press it gently against your forehead and cheeks. If you see any oily residue on the tissue, you probably have oily skin.
If you have areas of oily and dry skin on your face, your skin is considered combination skin, which is most common skin type.
